Saum/Siyaam – Fasting
- Waajib is the fasting during Ramadan
- Those who are sick during the time to an extent of being unable to fast (fasting would harm them more—includes pregnant women), and women on their menstrual period, they must make up the fasting they miss after Ramadan ends.
- Travelers may miss fasting, but must make it up.
- Of those who are exempt are those who are not sane.
- Conditions of fasting:
- Muslim and past the age of puberty
- Physically able to fast
- Sane
- You must make the intention to fast the night before you fast.
- Lasts from Fajr to Maghrib
- If you break fast by eating unintentionally, just continue to fast because it was an accident.
- If you intentionally do it by eating, drinking or having intercourse, then you must free a slave, feed 60 people (masakeen – the needy), or fast for two months.
- Sunnah to eat before fajr, before starting the fast.
- Fasting includes the fast from food, and all other desires (sex/lust, excess spending or speaking, speaking or acting badly, fighting, etc.)
- It develops our patience.
- Strengthens imaan
- Allows us to understand the hunger of those less fortunate.
- Cleanses our psyche so we realize our priorities
- Fasting = cleansing the soul
- It is the one action dedicated solely to Allah. We give up our provisions and desires for Him alone.
