Zakaat – Alms-giving
- Obligatory**
- Some people think that zakaat is simply charity, but it is not voluntary.
- It is a tax on our wealth to give to the less fortunate.
- It is a manner of purifying our wealth and means, and helping our brothers and sisters.
- Zakaat literally means that which purifies.
- What we give, we get back from Allah in greater forms than we can imagine or comprehend.
- We give the wealth of our dunya to build upon the wealth of our akhira.
- We give material wealth to gain riches in the wealth of our hearts and soul.
- It is 2.5% of our total income (collected wealth and savings).
- Only those with nisab (the financial means) are obliged to pay zakaat.
- Zakaatul Fitr is paid at the end of Ramadan.
- Sadaqah is voluntary charity and Sunnah.
- Cannot be given to the descendants of the Prophet ﷺ
- (9:60) persons who can receive zakaat include:
- The poor
- The needy
- Recent reverts
- Slaves (to free them from slavery)
- Those in devastating debt
- Those fighting fisabeelillah – this includes those who study in the way of Allah, anyone who strives to serve the Ummah
- Travelers
