Contrary to popular modern belief, bees are beautiful and necessary creatures in this world.
“And your Lord revealed to the bees to build dwellings in the mountains and trees, and the homes of men; then to eat the fruits of the Earth and to travel the paths of its Lord; there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colors wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is a sign for those who give thought.” (Quran, 16:68-69) They are the sole producers of honey which is a food of nourishment to the human body, a medicine to many ailments. What is incredible about the bees is that they continuously produce honey beyond their own needs; they innately produce honey, an important source of biological energy and healing properties for life. Narrated by Imam Ahmad, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that the believer is like a bee which eats that which is pure and wholesome and lays that which is pure and wholesome; when it lands on something it does not break or ruin it. There is much to learn from the bees. The bees eat that which is pure – they are repulsed by that which displeases the Lord, and likewise, Muslims should be the same. The bees lay that which is pure, and the same can be asked of the Muslims: good in their speech, actions and intentions. The bees are gentle in their surroundings, careful of those around them, as should the Muslims be. We as believers must go beyond what is present and seek the best of the best in our quest to please Allah. We must leave behind a legacy of beauty in our character, actions, morals. This is gathered from just those two ayats and hadith, but there is much more to the believer’s lesson on bees. In the beehive is an intricate organization by which the honey bees operate, and the culture of the worker bees is upheld by the female bees. This highlights not only the importance of women as givers and producers in society, but also the finely tuned details by which the hives of honey bees operate by. It is amazing that in a hive of thousands of bees, each individual has its appointed role and each bee is integral to the overall success of the hive. This is parallel to the ummah. Every person has a role in the interlaying foundation of the Muslim community – each individual has a set of responsibilities, and each person is accountable for his or her actions and how they reflect the community as a whole. It is only in acceptance of this fact that the community can prosper in unity. The believer is like the bee, the Prophet said. May Allah elevate our status amongst the believers.
