It is sufficient to fast just the day of Ashura (10th of Muharram) but RasulAllah (peace and blessings be upon him) told the believers to fast the 9th and 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th of the month (or all three days) to differentiate ourselves from the Jews who incurred the wrath of Allah. The day of Ashura commemorates the day that Allah the Almighty saved Bani Israel from the pharoah. At first, this fast was obligatory but then the obligation was abrogated and then it was made sunnah as the Prophet still fasted on this day (the one before or after).
Virtues of Fasting Ashura: RasulAllah said that the best fasting after is in this blessed month of Muharram. Reward of fasting Ashura: the sins of the previous year are washed away, forgiven. SubhanAllah! Don't forget to fast this Thurs+Friday or Fri+Saturday (or all three)!
