From the hadith posted today: Qais ibn Sa’d reported: A funeral passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he stood up. It was said to him, “It is a Jew.” The Prophet said, “Was he not a soul?” (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim) The Prophet (pbuh) stood out of respect for a man who passed away a non-Muslim. When people clamored around him, exclaiming that the deceased was a Jew, the Prophet then replied -- Was he not a soul?
People get so caught up in how they identify others versus themselves--this "us v. them" mentality that dehumanizes anyone who isn't like them. Remember that everything is in Allah's hands, so we must treat others well, respect humanity. Who knows if Allah is to turn the heart of someone nearby, or someone unexpected? May Allah keep our hearts firm in our faith and purify our intentions.
